In August 2026, significant drought is observed in the Dniester River basin, particularly in Khmelnytskyi and Chernivtsi regions. Hydrometeorologists predict record low water levels, declaring a brown alert in six regions of Ukraine. In Zakarpattia, a level III alert has also been issued due to extreme drought, which may affect the water management system.
From the beginning to today
From 26 to 31 August 2026, water levels in the Dniester basin rivers, particularly in Khmelnytskyi and Bukovyna, are forecasted to decline further. Some small river sections may see a complete halt in flow, while the Prut River in Chernivtsi has already reached a historic low.
From September 1 to 15, record low water levels are forecasted in the Dniester river basin. Hydrologists have declared a brown alert level due to water levels dropping to the lowest observed values in six regions of Ukraine.
A III danger level has been declared in Zakarpattia due to extreme low water levels in rivers. From September 1 to 15, water levels are expected to drop to the lowest historical figures, particularly in the upper sections of the Tysa and its tributaries. This may lead to issues with the functioning of the water management system.
